Launch of The State of World Population 2016

calendar_today 20 October 2016

Welcome to the release of The State of World Population 2016, published by UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund.

This year’s report is entitled, “10: How our future depends on a girl at this decisive age.”

In some parts of the world, age 10 can be a time of exploration, rapidly expanding horizons and new possibilities.

But in other parts of the world, it can be a time when barriers start appearing on the path to adulthood, limiting options, choices and opportunities. This is especially true for girls.

Investing in 10-year-old girls could yield huge demographic dividend, pump billions into national economies

• Girls are less likely than boys to complete schooling and more likely to face forced marriage, child labour, female genital mutilation and other undermining practices.
• More than half of the world’s 60 million 10-year-old girls live in the 48 countries with the worst gender inequality.
• $21 billion a year dividend for developing countries can be unlocked if all 10-year-old girls complete secondary education.

Statement

UNFPA in the Arab region stands firm in its commitment to uphold the welfare, rights and community involvement of the older persons throughout the region, with heightened focus on individuals residing in areas of ongoing humanitarian and conflict crises. The rate of population aging in the Arab region is remarkably increasing. By the year 2050, the population aged 60 and above is predicted to double, marking a significant demographic shift that holds both potential and hurdles necessitating immediate address.

At the regional launch of the State of World Population 2024 report:

Arab countries that prioritize women and girls in their development efforts have made significant progress in the face of polycrisis and emerging megatrends.

Despite all efforts and the progress made over the past 30 years in sexual and reproductive health, the most marginalized communities still lag behind.

Women are the thread and it requires us to count every stitch to unravel inequalities and build a peaceful and prosperous future for all.

Statement from UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem on World Population Day

For humanity to progress, people must be counted, wherever they are and whoever they are – in all their diversity. To end inequality, to find and grow peace and prosperity, to weave more threads of hope, the world needs to do more for inclusion.

Sweeping global gains in sexual and reproductive health and rights over the last thirty years are marred by an ugly truth – millions of women and girls have not benefited because of who they are or where they were born.

What women and girls want matters.

They make up 49.7 per cent of the global population, yet women and girls are often ignored in discussions on demographics, with their rights violated in population policies. The result is a world that excludes and marginalizes half the population of the planet – a problem that will prevent all of us from experiencing a more prosperous, peaceful and sustainable future.

At the root of this problem is gender inequality.

UNFPA report identifies rising population anxiety, urges radical rethink of how countries address changing demographics

New York, 19 April 2023 – New data reveals population anxieties are widespread and governments are increasingly adopting policies aimed at raising, lowering or maintaining fertility rates. But efforts to influence fertility rates are very often ineffective and can erode women’s rights, according to UNFPA's State of World Population report, released today.
