UNFPA in the Arab region stands firm in its commitment to uphold the welfare, rights and community involvement of the older persons throughout the region, with heightened focus on individuals residing in areas of ongoing humanitarian and conflict crises. The rate of population aging in the Arab region is remarkably increasing. By the year 2050, the population aged 60 and above is predicted to double, marking a significant demographic shift that holds both potential and hurdles necessitating immediate address. Women constitute a considerable segment of the aging community, often encountering amplified vulnerabilities. Actively addressing gender disparities is a crucial measure in ensuring that ageing women lead lives marked by dignity and security.
Older persons frequently encounter hindrances when accessing vital health services, mental health assistance, and preventative services. It is our profound call to action for investments to be placed towards health systems that inclusively cater to and are responsive to the needs of our senior populations. It is an unfortunate circumstance that several ageing people, especially females, face potential risks of poverty and isolation from society. Our duty is profound to fortify our social protection systems and assure that ageing individuals are meaningfully and genuinely involved in the decisions that directly influence their lives. In recognition of the invaluable contributions that older persons offer to their families, communities, and broader societies, we emphasize the importance of tackling the obstacles they face in accessing vital health services, mental health assistance, and preventative services
As we commemorate the International Day of Older Persons, the UNFPA Arab states regional office continues to implement various initiatives with a core focus on enlightening society about the living conditions of older persons in their communities. The development of analytical country profiles on population aging and its policy implications, the incorporation of a human rights-based approach to programming, and the organization of high-level meetings contribute significantly to advocating for the rights of older persons.
In line with this year’s theme for the International Day of Older Persons (October 01, 2024), “Ageing with dignity: The importance of strengthening care and support systems for older persons worldwide," UNFPA reiterates the importance of supporting the countries in the region in the formulation and execution of strategies that amplify the rights of older persons. Such strategies should cater to their specific needs, including the reinforcement of healthcare systems with enhanced accessibility, quality, and integration of services.
It is necessary to nurture environments that endorse the active participation of older individuals in community life and decision-making processes. Further, it is crucial to enhance data collection processes regarding older persons to better shape policies and programs. This ensures all decisions are evidence-based and are responsive to their needs. The UNFPA Arab states regional office remains steadfast in its support for the regional aging strategy (2019-2029) developed in collaboration with the League of Arab States, emphasizing that older individuals are deserving of dignity and respect.
