Since October 20, 2024, Aj Jazirah State in Sudan has experienced an alarming rise in violence, resulting in over 124 civilian deaths and the displacement of approximately 135,400 people to neighbouring states. Reports from the region highlight severe human rights abuses, including at least 27 women and girls subjected to sexual violence. In addition to the security challenges, essential healthcare services have been compromised, with six health facilities attacked, two health workers killed, and only 25% of health facilities remaining operational in the most affected areas. This crisis is compounded by a cholera outbreak, placing further strain on already limited healthcare resources.

In response, UNFPA has mobilized extensive support focusing on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV) services. Five mobile medical teams have conducted 1,200 consultations, with additional teams prepared to provide further support as access improves. Essential SRH supplies for safe deliveries and comprehensive care are being distributed across key locations, with backup supplies on the way. UNFPA is also supporting facilities like Eltahely Hospital with solar power to maintain essential healthcare services. For GBV survivors, UNFPA is deploying mobile psychosocial support teams, establishing safe spaces, and distributing dignity kits. Additionally, cash assistance is being provided to GBV survivors to support immediate needs, and targeted safety audits are underway to inform a tailored response.
