Two-year conflict in Yemen’s takes heaviest toll on women and girls

Sana’a, Yemen – UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund estimates that the health and protection of more  than 2.2 million women and girls of childbearing age are at risk as the conflict in Yemen enters two-years.

Over three million people are displaced because of the conflict, said UNFPA’s representative a.i. Ezizgeldi Hellenov. More than of half of them are women and girls; they are typically those that pay the highest price in any war.”

  • The devastating drought currently ravaging Somalia is threatening the lives of 607 thousand pregnant women around the country. More than 130 thousands of them may require critical and urgent assistance. Somalia already has one of the highest maternal mortality ratios in the world (732) and one out of every 22 women is likely to die due to pregnancy or childbrith-related causes during her life course.

Since military operations in western Mosul began on 19 February, approximately 8,000 people have fled from western Mosul and its surrounding villages to locations south of Mosul city. People arriving at these locations are often exhausted and dehydrated. Emergency kits of food and water have been distributed to 8,800 people in camps and emergency sites, in addition to distributions to displaced people moving to these locations.
