Moroccan Y-Peers Mobilize Fellow Youth for Gender Equality

calendar_today 10 March 2014

RABAT, Morocco - Role plays unfolding the consequences of gender inequality in the lives of Moroccan girls were a centerpiece of the Y-Peers outreach to students at a high school in Rabat on the occasion of the International Women’s Day. In partnership with Amnesty International Morocco and United Nations Information Center, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) supported the Moroccan Y-Peers in their efforts to mobilize and raise awareness about gender equality.

The female and male students participating were also engaged in a discussion around the linkages between sexual and reproductive health, gender equality and MDGs. The role plays evolved around the students’ own experiences of situations and views related to child marriage, unprotected sex and unsafe abortion.

The International Women’s Day was only solely a point of departure for the Y-Peer Network in Morocco, which during the course of 2014 will be reaching out to youth in disadvantaged areas and involving the arts as means of facilitating change in attitudes and behaviors.
